We are delighted to announce we are supporting a new work by the artist Anicka Yi premiering at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. This year, the curator Ralph Rugoff has titled the exhibition May You Live in Interesting Times, drawn from an alleged Chinese curse used in the 1930s indicating a time of political and economical unrest and heightened world crises. Sounding candidly familiar today, Rugoff states that the exhibition “will highlight a general approach to making art and a view of arts’ social function as embracing both pleasure and critical thinking”.
Opening to the public on 11 May and continuing until 24 November, we look forward to sharing more information and images of Yi’s work with you soon!
We were recently in Brussels viewing Anicka’s latest exhibition at Gladstone Gallery, “We Have Never Been Individual”, showing until 15 June 2019.
Anicka Yi
Anicka Yi lives and works in New York City. Yi’s practice relates to synthetic biology, bio engineering, extinction, and bio fiction. Her work examines concepts of “the biopolitics” of the senses or how assumptions and anxieties related to gender, race, and class shape physical perception. Recent institutional solo exhibitions of her work include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Fridericianum, Kassel; Kunsthalle Basel; List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Kitchen, New York; and The Cleveland Museum of Art. Yi’s work will be featured in the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. She has screened her film, The Flavor Genome, at the 2017 Whitney Biennial and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, 2017. In 2016, she was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize. She is represented by 47 Canal, New York.
