30 Artists, 30 Years – Mark Sealy

As part of our 30 Artists, 30 Years project, we were excited to speak with Mark Sealy. We are pleased to have supported Mark’s curation of the first UK major retrospective of the photographer Sunil Gupta at The Photographers’ Gallery, London (October 2020 – January 2021). We asked him a few questions about what inspires his work, Sunil Gupta’s exhibition, and how he looks at the future. See his answers below.

 

Biography

Dr. Mark Sealy MBE, Director was appointed Director of Autograph in 1991. He was awarded the Hood Medal for services to photography in 2007 by the Royal Photographic Society, and in January 2013 he was awarded an MBE for services to photography. He completed a PhD at Durham University, where his research focused on photography and cultural violence. He has curated several major exhibitions, and his publications include Different (Phaidon 2001) with Professor Stuart Hall.
