The Bottom Drawer with Deepa Anappara

Join the Bagri Foundation for our latest online series The Bottom Drawer. Featuring interviews with guest writers to discuss their early efforts and inspiration. On 25 August, we speak with author Deepa Anappara, writer of Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line – shared via Instagram, Youtube and Facebook from 2pm BST. She will be interviewed by special guest Sarah Shaffi.

Biographies

Deepa Anappara was born in Kerala, southern India, and worked as a journalist in India for eleven years. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, where she is currently studying for a Creative-Critical Writing PhD. Her debut novel Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020. It was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and a BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick. It is also being translated into over 20 languages.

 

 

Sarah Shaffi is a literary journalist and editor, and currently managing editor at Penguin.co.uk. Her writing has features in Stylist, Phoenix Magazine, Red and more. She was a judge for the Jhalak Prize 2019 and the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2020. Sarah is editor-at-large at independent children’s publisher Little Tiger Group. She regularly chairs author events, and is co-founder of BAME in Publishing, a networking group for people of colour in publishing.
