8 March – 2 June 2024.
We are delighted to announce our support for a compelling project at the South London Gallery (SLG) titled Acts of Resistance, organised in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), as part of the V&A Parasol Foundation Women in Photography Project. This innovative exhibition, set to open on International Women’s Day, on 8 March 2024, explores the profound intersection of photography, activism, and feminism from an international and contemporary perspective.
Acts of Resistance features an array of works by renowned international artists and collectives who utilise the camera to challenge and surpass conventional protest photography. The exhibition delves into urgent and political themes, examining feminism and activism over the past decade. The showcased works highlight shared concerns, including intersectionality, transnational solidarity, and the impactful use of social media and digital technology as tools for societal change.
The exhibition reflects on significant global events, such as anti-rape protests in Bangladesh responding to increased violence against women and girls in 2020, the US Supreme Court overturning of Roe vs. Wade in 2022, and ongoing protests against the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
Among the distinguished artists featured in the exhibition are Laia Abril, Hoda Afshar, Poulomi Basu, Nan Goldin, Guerrilla Girls, Sofia Karim, Mari Katayama, Sethembile Msezane, Zanele Muholi, Wendy Red Star, Tabita Rezaire, Raphaela Rosella, Aida Silvestri, Sheida Soleimani, Hannah Starkey, Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel, and Carmen Winant.
Curated by Sarah Allen, Head of Programme at South London Gallery, and Fiona Rogers, The V&A’s Parasol Foundation Curator of Women in Photography, along with Lily Tonge, Curator, Exhibitions and Events at South London Gallery, Acts of Resistance promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the power of photography in challenging societal norms and advocating for change. We, The Bagri Foundation, are proud to support this significant endeavour that aligns with our commitment to fostering cultural understanding and social impact through the arts.
